Loo is how we explain things to ourselves. Children start out by being controlled by their parents, teachers, peer groups etc, but they'll get away with whatever they can. Call them Inner Directed. Little egotists. Over a period of time most people eventually internalize the Categorization Schemes, the Manners, Ethics and Morals of their immediate surroundings into an internal Mind Scheme as they buy in to their society. That's usually fairly complete by their mid teens. Then they can be called Outer Directed. For most of them that lasts the rest of their life. Just occasionally that phase is very brief, or never happens at all, and the child grows up to march to their own drum beat. Not an Inner Directed adult who is a child that never grew up to take responsibility as a member of society but someone who has matured in a different direction. That can be called Other Directed. Essentially as an alien stranger in a strange land. With their own hand crafted morality and ethics. Usually disguised so as to not get into trouble. Curiously, when the concept of Other Direction is brought up in a College level Sociology or Anthropology class, practically everyone in the class considers themselves to be Other Directed. They believe that they have made up their own minds as to what they believe and how they live. Yet when psych tests and personal histories are run on these same students typically much less than 1 percent of them are actually Other Directed. The rest have a kind of delusion of their own clear thinking and independence and consider the fact that they have the same basic beliefs and mores of their parents and society to be a mere coincidence. They know that they decided to be that because it was just so very reasonable and true. Some people with the tightest little shut minds consider themselves to be rational open minded clear thinkers. If forced to live in a foreign society, like an American soldier stationed overseas, they go into culture shock. They just can't cope. They'll stay on their Base, eat American food, watch American movies and never ever learn the local language no matter how long they are stationed there.
