The Wizard of Oz The
forest of "Enchanted forest" is a home to fairies, nymphs,
"Bents" who watch over the beasts and look old and worn and crooked
and the "Regulators" who watch over the flowers and plants. Once
there lived there a wood-nymph called "Fairy woman". She was related
to the mighty Queen "Fairylike".
She frightened away the "Ones who cause distress and injury"
who took evil delight in flying against the tree-trunks and wounding them. The
Master Woodman of the World called for "Diligent servant" to fetch wood
from the forest and warm the room where the children lay. Not far away,
screened by the forest, crouched "Hunger",
the lioness, intent upon devouring the infant for her evening meal. But he commanded "Hunger" to lie close to the
babe, and to give it her milk to quiet its hunger. 'Let him be called
"A little bundle", answered "Fairy woman", 'for
that means a little one.' 'Rather let him be called "Fairy
bundle",'returned the Queen, 'for that will mean "Fairy woman's"
little one.' The
nymphs searched the forest for bell-udders which grow upon the "cow with
abundant milk"-tree and when opened are found to be filled with sweet milk.
The "spirits of frenzied
evil" were neither mortals nor immortals, but stood midway between those
classes of beings. They were invisible to ordinary people, but not to
immortals. They could pass swiftly through the air from one part of the
world to another, and had the power of influencing the minds of human beings to
do their wicked will. And the Prince
of the "Regulators" added: 'For my part I will allow to every
deer that assists him the privilege of eating my "That which gives
strength" plants, which give strength, and my "Like a roaring
wind" plants, which give fleetness of foot, and my "Having to do with
mortality" plants, which give long
life.' ' Likewise it will be well for you to bathe in the Pool of "Beauty",
which will render you rarely beautiful.'
These were "Natural", the Master Woodsman of the World, who
rules the forests and the orchards and the groves; and "Sickle", the
Master Husbandman of the World, who rules the grain fields and the meadows and
the gardens; and "Boatman", the Master Mariner of the World, who rules
the seas and all the craft that float thereon.
And all other immortals are more or less subject to these three. Land of Oz Queen Zixi of Ix The fairies assembled one
moonlit night in a pretty clearing of the ancient forest of "Enchanted
forest". During the full of the moon the fairy band ruled by
"Dancing fairy" loved to dance and make merry. "Quiet" a
sweet little fairy who had not before spoken suggested that they weave a magic
cloak. "Golden haired" a fairy with fluffy golden hair and clear blue
eyes came late. The five high counselors were named variants of "Extreme
justice". They were waited on by "Nervous, eager" who was the
king's valet who was lean and thin and terribly nervous and very talkative.
Aunt Rivette wanted to make Mammy "Stingy housewife" jealous of her
wealth. It is not far from the kingdom of Noland to the kingdom of "Night"
which is ruled over by Queen "Illusion" who merely appears to be
young and beautiful. Queen "Illusion" made a potion in a cup shaped
leaf of the "Cup shaped" plant. The potion changed her appearance to
be that of "Fair lady" and she wanted to be a maid of Princess Fluff
in order to acquire the magic cloak. Ozma of Oz Dorothy Gael, sorry, Gale meets a clock-work man made in the capital city “Nowhere” in the land of “Nonexistence” which borders the ocean of Nonexistence. She finds out about the cruel king named “Imprudent” who sold his wife and children for a long life and then threw himself and his long life away. The maid “Pearl” opens the door to the palace. The king of the Nomes is named “Rocky” of the Rocks. “One who desires to conquer” becomes Captain General of the army and commander of the body guard. “Prince” becomes king of the land of “Nonexistence”. Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz The party falls through a hole in the earth and meet a sorcerer named “Invoker” who asks them why they have intruded their unwelcome persons into the land of the inhabitants of “Twig Valley”. The wizard mispronounces the name of “Twig Valley” as “Loathsome Valley” or “Thorny Valley”. Leaving the veggies they come to the Valley of “Hide and Seek” where if you eat the fruit called “Unseen” you become invisible. They meet a little boy named “Johnny”. They are told about the great Champion, Overman-“Overman”. Later “Mother of Youth” rescues them from a caveual prison. The wizard was very happy among the “Little Men”, “Little Women”, “Little Girls” and “Little Boys” when he ruled them. The queen of the Land of “Youth” informs the wizard that the word “Youth” means “Great” and “Goodness” in the language of the Land of “Youth” punning “Oz”, “Woz” and “Yoz”. She informs him that the witch “Witch” used to rule the north and that “Pure” the Good rules the south. Dorothy is addressed by the “Yearling” stuffed head on the wall. Road to Oz The travelers meet the soup loving “Gluttons” and escape from them. Guests at the birthday party include the Head “Magistrate” of King Dough. Santa is accompanied by “Regulators” from the Happy Valley and crooked “Bents” from the forest of “Enchanted forest”. Queen “Illusion” of the land of “Night” attended and goblets of “Nectar, elixir of youth” were served to all. “Pure” the Good caused a tree to grow that bears the delicious fruit called “Delicious”. Emerald City of Oz The Nome kings chief steward “Cupbearer” is sent out to get General “Chopped up”. After he is thrown away, Colonel “Chewed up” is fed to the seven-headed dogs, and “Malicious” becomes General. He recruits the Whimsies and then meets the Grand “Violent power” of the “Growling goblins”. Then he goes on to the Phanfasms of Mount Phantastico who are “Chaotics”. The owl-man guide wailed out “Please come here” to call the First and Foremost. Meanwhile Dorothy and her companions get to put Fuddles together including Larry the Lord High “Puzzle solver”. Patchwork Girl of Oz “Fated” asks “Taciturn” for the butter. ‘Isn’t’, he replies. They go to visit Doctor “Magician”, previously called “Crooked”, the Crooked Magician. Old “Witch” the witch gave Doctor “Magician” a powder of perpetual youth in exchange for the powder of life but she cheated him. The wise donkey came from the land of “If”. They meet the “Roarer” who is quite proud of his growl. To make him angry they say “Bloody cross” to him. Later they meet “Piercer” who is an overgrown porcupine who can throw his quills. “Fated” is escorted to a pretty house which is a prison and “Jail housekeeper” the jailer. In the mountains they manage to get past Mister “Gaping mouth” the cannibal. Little Wizard Stories of Oz: Little Dorothy and Toto While wandering around Oz against the little wizard's warnings that something bad might happen to her if she was all alone (with Toto) Dorothy saw a sign saying, ‘Look out for “Trick playing wizard”’ and she ignored it. She got carried off, forced to wash dishes and it turned out it was the wizard playing a trick. When Dorothy found out it was him she opined that she might forgive him, by’n’by, but just for the moment she was mad. Tik-Tok of Oz Ann Soforth is queen of “North valley”, a valley up in the north. “Almanacist” Soforth used to be king and do all the drudgery of deciding disputes and telling his people when to plant cabbages and pickle onions. ((by the light of a waning moon, otherwise they bloat and become onion fragments)) “Nurturer” Apple, so called because he had an apple orchard, and all the other “Nurturers” except for “Nurturer” Candy were enlisted into Ann’s army. Files said ‘The only picture of a “Dragon” that I saw in a book was blurred, but the creature can fly in the air and run like a deer and swim like a fish. Inside its body is a glowing furnace of fire, the “Dragon” breathes in air and breathes out smoke’. The king of the Nomes is sometimes called the metal monarch and his name is “Rocky”, he was formerly named “Rocky” but after he drank of the waters of oblivion he forgot his own name and had to take another. The rose princess is named “Youth thorn” and is a distant cousin of “Mother of youth”. Betsy was the guest of “Brilliant”, queen of light. “Impertinent” was a young dragon who had not yet acquired the wisdom of his race. He had the audacity to tell the original dragon to mind his own business and again said that the ancient one had grown foolish with age. The forbidden tube had a sign saying that it was burrowed and built by “Below tunneler” the magician for his own exclusive uses. Scarecrow of Oz Trot and Cap’n Bill meet a “Torque” who has a spinny, turny propeller for a tail. They fly as midgets to the famous land of “If”. From there they fly to “Little people” land in the “Little girl” country of the land of “Youth”. There they meet “Apprentice” the gardener’s boy. The king wanted the princess to marry a rich courtier named “Toffy nosed ponce” but she really, really didn’t want to. “Pure” the good sent the scarecrow to protect Trot, Cap’n Bill and Button Bright. Rinkitink in Oz The kingdom of “Kingdom of Summer” is on the coast of the great Nonestic ocean and four days sail to the north is the island of “Islet of Rakers” whose people raked oysters and sent many sacks of pearls to “Sweethaven” the capital of “Kingdom of Summer”. At the north end of the island is the palace of king “Forethought”. To the far north of the island are the twin islands of “Kingdom of Vicious” and “Vicious” inhabited by a fierce and warlike people. Anxiety on the part of king “Forethought” led him to keep a sharp lookout for strange boats. He was a good king and lived with his queen “Raker” and their son, prince “Hero”. One day king “King of Summer” came to the island with his goat “Backtalker” who seemed a bit acerbic of speech. The scroll ‘how to be good’ was of such quality that king “King of Summer” was going to make the writer a royal “Most clever speaker”, for beyond question he was the wisest man in the kingdom as he often pointed out. A fog came up one morning and cleared by noon. During that time the warriors of “Kingdom of Vicious” and “Vicious” landed and captured king “Forethought” before he was able to reach the magic pearls. The island of “Kingdom of Vicious” was ruled by King “Is what it is”. The island of “Vicious” was ruled by Queen “Is what it is”. When the warriors of “Kingdom of Vicious” saw the boat approaching they went down to the shore to meet it led by a big captain named “Fierce”. A charcoal burner named “Faggot chopper” found the shoes with the pearls and took them to give to his daughter “Star”. As he walked through the forest he was set upon by “Gluttonizer of dragons” who was very fond of eating dragons. The royal prisoners of the nome king were sent away in charge of the nome with the golden collar and keys named “Key”. The wizard looked at the goat “Backtalker” and recognized him as the transformed prince “Goat kid” of “Goat kid” land. Lost Princess of Oz In the far southwestern corner of the “Little women” country is a broad tableland where the “Flat peak of a hill” people live. A frog grew very fast, very big and unusually intelligent for a frog by feeding on the magic “That which puffs up, causes conceit”. When the “Little women” wife named “Confronted by a rogue” saw the frogman she called out to her husband to take a look at the astonishing freak. In the city among the thistles the high “Great thistle eater” is the judge who enforces the laws that he makes up. The one who enchanted the peach and placed it in the exact center of the great orchard so that no one would find it was “Shoemaker” the shoemaker. What makes the Herkus so strong is the drink called “That which makes strong”. Tin Woodman of Oz The boy said that he was known as “Wanderer” the wanderer. The tin woodman’s old sweetheart, “Beautiful servant girl”, was obliged to work from morning to night for the old witch. The travelers found the home of the wife of mister “Gaping mouth”, the cannibalistic giant confined in a cage. They thought the house was empty but the giant lady who captured them averred that she was an artist in transformations, more of a “Maker of imitations” than a witch. Magic of Oz On the east edge of the land of “Youth” in the “Little man” country is a big tall hill called mount “Upright”. On top are the families of Hyups = “High up” as the people call themselves. In one of the houses lived “Person at the peak - High up” who used to be a clever sorcerer. When he destroyed all his magical equipment he saved his knowledge of the magical word “Enigma” which transforms oneself and others instantly. He had a wife named “Bilberrier - High up” who was famous for making fine huckleberry pies and a son named “Irritable person - High up” who was noted for being cross and disagreeable. The son transformed himself into a hawk and flew over the desert to the countries where Chick the Cherub is prime minister “Magistrate”. As a dove he flew to the kingdom of “Night” ruled over by queen “Illusion” who only appears to be young and beautiful. Then he went on westward to the land of “Nonexistence” where he meets “Rocky” who use to be the nome king. The “Roaring” forest is named after the enormous yellow leopard who is king. To maintain order he has three counselors named “Bear” the bear, “Like an elk” the unicorn and “Chatterer” the gray ape. There had been trouble in the forest. “Wild boar” the wild boar had bitten off the tail of “Extremely tall” the giraffe. The giraffe kicked and struck “Hoppy” the kangaroo who knocked the boar over and ran away. As Cap’n Bill was making a raft, a “Slasher” approached. Monkeys were transformed into giant soldiers. ‘I’m “Ape” your father’, cried one soldier to a monkey who had perched on his left ear. ‘I’m your uncle “Mischievous”’, said another soldier to another monkey. Glinda of Oz The supreme dictator told “Fellow” flathead, a fellow dictator, to go away. The “Person who lives in the neck of a bottle” people live on a magic island under a glass dome. Their queen “Self involved” who was a “Queen bee" witch, transformed the flathead witch “Red woman” into a golden pig with ruby eyes. Queen “Delightful” made all of the land of “Youth” a fairyland. Queen “Self involved” gave charge of the girls to lady “Lady in waiting”. One of the “Person who live in the neck of a bottle” named “Reckoner” who later became their prime minister, followed the advice of the fishy adepts and went to the house of a powerful “Maker of imitations” named “Redhead” the red. The three adepts at magic introduce themselves as “Bright waters”, “Fine waters” and “Good waters”. They found a rare mineral power called “Legerdemain” by the sorcerers. |
