the Emerald City of Oz
part 1
|
In City the mapping is of Theosophical
interest. It is time to describe Geocentric Orreries. Also known as
Philosopher's Tables. The diagram below is of a Chinese Orrery, which you may
know of as a Feng Shui compass. It is in two parts. There is a square base
which represents the four quarters of the Earth. It has a pivot point in the
middle. On that pivot rests a circular board with 12 major segments and a lot
of minor ones. It represents the Heavens with the 12 signs of the Zodiac. The
center of it has a compass that allows the whole business to be aligned with
magnetic South. The Heaven board can be rotated to represent the rotation
of the stars and planets in the Heavens. Lately geomanticists usually only have
the circular part and use some handy table as the square base. |

| Practically every occult and demi occult society has their own version of a Philosopher's Table. The Theosophic one looks like the one on the left below.. |

| The square Earth is in the middle with the circular Heavens on the outside. A physical expression is a little more difficult to make than the Chinese version. There is a base below with a rod going up from the middle. The circular Heavens board has a hole in the middle that fits on that and pivots on it. Then the square Earth board goes on top of that and does not pivot. So the Heavens board goes round and round and the Earth board stays where it's at. The set up for Faerie is topsy turvy as mentioned in Wizard part 1 with the East West reversal and is the one on the right above. The Heavens board of the one on the right is a mirror image of the one on the left. That would make a map of Oz and the Borderlands which is consistant with the first five Oz books. In Wizard Dorothy lands in the Blue Munchkin country in the East of Oz and travels West to the Emerald City and to the Winkie country of the West. In Ozma Dorothy lands in Ev which is the Purple segment in the Eastern side of the circle, goes North to the Yellow realm of the Nomes and then West to the country of the Munchkins and on to the Emerald City. In Road Dorothy lands in the Purple segment in the Western side of the circle and travels East to the desert and then crosses it to the country of the Winkies. Then East to the Emerald City. Then Ozma has her first Birthday as Ozma and Ozma and Oz are reborn as a real Fairyland. Changes take place. Ozma is mother of all. She owns everything. Oz is her house and the Ozites are her children. Money goes out of use and no one dies of old age or disease, though a chicken did die of disease, perhaps earlier. What I think happened was that the Heavens circle rotated as part of the rebirth of Oz. The dawn of a new day. Evening turned into morning. Night turned into day. The old situation is below on the left and the new situation below on the right. |
| Thus in relationship to the Great Outer World, Oz is reversed East to West and the Borderlands North to South. Ev is still to the East from their own point of view but traveling West from Ev takes them to the Winkie country rather than the Munchkin country that it used to. So when the Nomes dig a tunnel from their country which is now the Yellow area just below the outside Purple area on the right, they go under the Winkie country, rather than the Munchkin country as they would before. And from the point of view of the Nomes the Quadling country is to the North. So we have the statements from the Nome's point of view that Glinda, who commands the spirits of the air, is at the North. Guph visits the Whimsies nearest to the Nome king, the Nome kingdom is still North of Ev and East of Oz and Guph continues to the Northwest crossing the Ripple land to the country of the Growleywogs then back through the Ripple lands to the Phanfasms. This arrangement more or less corresponds to the map given in the endpapers of Tik-Tok as far as physical locations. Professor Wogglebug must have been tearing his hair out (if he has any) to make the previous crossings of the Deadly Desert fit though. |
