Righ Chionn Bhaile shionnach - Ree Honn Wally honnagh - King Dox of Foxville Ruaidhnhairidhe - Rory - the Red One = Fox = Renard By removing the spiration and offglide indicators it's a little easier to see the relationship between the two forms of the same name. The French use Reynard as their standard name for foxes, again so as not to use the real name and thus call foxes. Fox itself, in its numerous Indo-European variations is formed from a diminutive of Wolf and as "Little Wolf" appears to be another way of not calling foxes. Well, wouldn't it call wolves then? It seems the word Wolf - in all its Indo-European and Sino-Tibetan forms at least - comes from the word "Mharg" meaning Killer or Murderer. Some folks think that's an Epithet too and that any original word for Wolf is lost lost lost. If human language changed from being calls, as in other animal languages, to words about 30,000 years ago that would be true. On the other hand, some linguists think that the change happened about 8000 years ago driven by social changes brought about by the invention of agriculture. That would account for the remarkable similarity of some really mutually remote languages and make the recovery of the original human language a possible possibility. Anyhow, maybe a few words here and there. If the original word for Wolf was derived from a call meaning "Watch out, there's a wolf around here somewhere!" it might be recoverable by comparing all known words for canine type predators in all known languages. There are people trying to do that. Gheaibhne is the call form of Goibhne (Gownee) who is the coppersmith fairy. Hence the copper tool box. He's the one who makes all the neat stuff, swords, prosthetic hands, pots, pans etc for the fairy court. His name means "One who works in copper". This is where Gabha - Gau - Smith and Goban - Goban - Tinker come from. He also brews the ale that keeps the fairies young forever. In the cauldron which he made which is one of the four treasures. He comes if you call him right and heals and mends what is sick and broken. The Gaels would put a burnt through pan on an Ogam stone at midnight, along with a copper penny and look to see if it was mended in the morning. According to story, that stopped working in the late 1800s when the fairy court left Ireland. Too bad, cause that was a lot cheaper and faster than waiting for a traveling tinker.
