The Land of Oz Jack Lantern. Also Jack o'Lantern. Earlier Jack with the Lantern. Also Will o'the Wisp. Earlier Will with the Wisp. That's Will as in William. Generally thought of as a small pixiesque skeletal creature with a glowing skull for a head. That being the Lantern. Duplicated by hollowing out a turnip which is carved to resemble a skull and putting a candle inside. Good for handouts a Halloween. The payout possibly reflecting the old Saturnalia, the twelve days of Christmas when the Kallikantsari, the Centauri were free to roam the earth and nobody went out at night except for their personators, who were dressed in rags and tags and due bits of money and food and a drink of something warming. Interesting how things get shifted around when two different mythologies collide. The Wisp in question is a small fagot of straw used as a spill to light a fire. A teeny tiny torch. The Jack o'Lantern as a variety of Puca hangs around in marshes and graveyards and is also called Wanderer, Fhuad, Woot and it is very dangerous to follow its wandering travels. Travellers lost in a marsh who follow a Will o'the Wisp are often not seen again. Jack Pumpkinhead instead of Jack Turniphead.
